Andre Johnson Architects was contracted by North Carolina State University to perform a programming study focused on assessing the current use of The Butler Communications Building and making recommendations as to how efficiency of use and future growth may be maximized. The building is home to University Communications and Agricultural Communications. It is a two-story building with an occupiable area of roughly 43,000 square feet. The focus of the study was the University Communications spaces on the first floor of the building. Through our meetings with the user group and NCSU we gained an understanding of the essential aspects of UComm’s working environment, including critical adjacencies, privacy needs, and minimum space requirements. The study yielded 3 space configuration options. The first option maximized the growth potential for UComm and utilized all the available square footage for their functions. The other two options provided more limited growth opportunity for UComm but preserved some amount of shell space for NCSU departmental growth within the building. Each of the options provided private offices for all necessary positions per UComm’s request. All existing support spaces were preserved in each option, however some were relocated and resized per UComm’s approval. The existing restroom facilities were expanded to meet code and ADA requirements, and a single accessible shower room was added. Mechanical spaces were slightly increased. Storage was consolidated and or relocated where possible.
