364 West Gate City Boulevard is a 67,820 square foot mixed-use development located on a site which previously contained a barbershop. The project consists of retail spaces located on the first level, a barber school, and the relocated barber shop on the second level, and 44 multi-family apartment units on the upper levels. To accommodate the new program, the original site was expanded to include neighboring lots. The form of the building is expressed as shifted masses with areas cut through them to allow for the creation of breezeways. This strategy facilitates natural daylighting, ventilation and views in the circulation corridors which provide access to the residential units. These punches in the mass also create a non-redundant rhythm on the façade. They work in conjunction with the various sizes of the concrete fiber board panels, metal panels and storefront glass units to create a rich elevational composition.
