The Bar-Ber Shop

The Bar-Ber Shop is a unique project that combines the function of a barber shop and the social aspects of a bar and lounge. The project is approximately 1,500 square feet and transformed a long and narrow tenant space in a strip mall in Raleigh just south of downtown. The dual uses coincide to highlight the tradition of barbershops in the African American community as venues for social connection.The host / hostess staff serve drinks as a complimentary service to the clients while they wait for a haircut. The result is a multi-function space that has become a social hub. Outside of business hours the shop accommodates a range of gatherings including community information meetings around public health and wellness among other topics.
